CONDITIONS
HYPERTENSION
Blood pressure is the force at which blood pumps through the arteries. High blood pressure is when this force is too strong, causing damage the arteries and leading to life-threatening complications such as heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, aneurysms, lack of blood flow to the kidneys or eyes and metabolic syndrome if left untreated.
It is unknown what causes high blood pressure. However, those over the age of 65, who are stressed, obese or overweight and are alcohol drinkers are a high risk of developing high blood pressure. High blood pressure may also be caused by underlying conditions or medications such as birth control pills, cold remedies, decongestants and over-the-counter pain relievers. While high blood pressure is rather subtle with regards to symptoms, those experiencing shortness of breath, headaches and nosebleeds should visit their physician to rule out this chronic and life-threatening condition.
Depending on your health, Dr Magashule may suggest changing your diet, exercising more regularly and limiting alcohol intake. In addition, your physician may prescribe diuretics, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers and angiotensin II receptor blockers to lower blood pressure and support your kidneys.
