ENDOCRINE DISORDERS

The endocrine system consists of a collection of glands that produce hormones which regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, reproduction, sleep and mood. The thyroid gland influences almost all of the metabolic processes in your body. Maintaining a balance of the hormones is essential. Abnormal production of hormones by the thyroid can range from small and harmless conditions to life-threatening cancer. The most common is an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

A thyroid disorder, hypothyroidism, may be caused by an autoimmune disorder, exposure to excessive amounts of iodide or as a result of the removal of the thyroid gland. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism may be caused by Graves' disease, toxic adenomas, inflammation of the thyroid, pituitary gland malfunctions or cancerous growths in the thyroid gland. Typically the following symptoms may be a sign of thyroid disease or imbalance:

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid):

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Hyperactivity
  • Excessive sweating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or light menstruation in females

Symptoms of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid):

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Fatigue
  • Poor concentration
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Depression
  • Aching of the joints or muscles
  • Frequent, heavy menstruation in females

While the effects of a thyroid imbalance can be uncomfortable, most of these conditions can be treated effectively. You should see your physician if you are struggling with one or more of these symptoms so that Dr Magashule can screen you for anything more serious like thyroid cancer.
